How to Choose Chopsticks for Camping and Outdoor Use
"Camping chopsticks" are an essential item for meals during camping and other outdoor activities.
As outdoor enthusiasts, we want to do our part to protect the natural environment by making a conscious effort to minimize waste at campsites.
If you’re enjoying BBQs, hearty outdoor meals, or freshly cooked rice at a campsite, bring eco-friendly, reusable camping chopsticks instead of disposable ones.
There is a wide variety of camping chopsticks available on the market. With so many options in terms of materials, lengths, and designs, it can be hard to know which ones to choose when you’re ready to buy.
While ease of use and price are important factors, you’ll also want to consider how easy they are to clean and how portable they are.
In this article, we’ll introduce the types of camping chopsticks, their features, key selection tips, and our recommended products.
- Disposable chopsticks just don’t cut it…
- I’m hesitant about using disposable chopsticks…
If these concerns resonate with you, please use this guide as a reference.
Tip #1: Choose a Compact Type
When cooking or eating while camping, you have to bring many items—such as a BBQ grill or fire pit—as well as cooking utensils, dishes, cups, and cutlery.
For this reason, we recommend choosing chopsticks that are as “easy to carry” as possible. Here are some types of chopsticks for camping.
- Collapsible Type
As the name suggests, split-type chopsticks can be separated in the middle.
For example, some models combine different materials—such as a wooden tip (the part that touches the food) and a stainless steel grip—and can be used by “snapping the two parts together” or “screwing them into place.”
Since you can shorten long chopsticks to half their length, they’re easy to carry in a bag or pocket.
-Standard Type
The "Standard Type" refers to chopsticks that cannot be separated in the middle, just like regular household chopsticks. These are the most common type, and outdoor gear manufacturers sell them in a variety of materials, designs, and colors.
At first glance, they look just like ordinary chopsticks, but those sold for outdoor or camping use often come with a dedicated storage pouch.
- Storage Type
"Storage Type" refers to chopsticks that can be separated into two parts, with the tips designed to fit snugly into the handle.
If you simply separate them, a single pair of chopsticks becomes four pieces and tends to get scattered, but with the storage type, you can keep the upper and lower halves together, making them less likely to get lost.
How to Choose #2: Choose by Material
Camping chopsticks often feature more attention to detail in terms of material, color, and design compared to standard household chopsticks, so using them at a campsite is likely to be more enjoyable than using disposable chopsticks.
The basic materials for camping chopsticks include stainless steel, titanium, wood, bamboo, and plastic.
-Stainless Steel
While not commonly used in regular households, metal chopsticks made of stainless steel or titanium are often seen in Korean restaurants.
Stainless steel chopsticks are extremely durable and stay in pristine condition for a long time without the tips chipping or wearing down like wooden chopsticks.
Additionally, stainless steel is highly rust- and corrosion-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about rust or discoloration. It also resists absorbing colors and odors, making it a hygienic choice.
Designs vary widely, ranging from simple, polished styles to those with decorative engravings on the handles.
-Titanium
Titanium chopsticks are highly resistant to rust and corrosion, and are lighter than stainless steel.
Because of their low thermal conductivity, heat is less likely to transfer to the handles when eating hot food, making them ideal not only for dining but also for stir-frying and other cooking tasks.
They are sturdy and long-lasting, and you’re less likely to notice a metallic odor compared to stainless steel. However, they are more expensive than stainless steel.
-Wooden and Bamboo
Wooden chopsticks are the most popular type, commonly used by many people at home. Some people may find that using the wooden chopsticks they’re accustomed to at home makes them feel more at ease even while camping!
Wooden chopsticks are lighter than metal ones and don’t make a clinking sound when they bump together during meals. Their lightness and warm feel are also appealing.
However, since they lack durability, it’s best to store them in a case rather than carrying them loose.
Bamboo chopsticks are more resistant to oil and heat than wooden ones and are often used as cooking chopsticks. They are lightweight and easy to carry, and while they are stronger than wooden chopsticks, they are not as strong as metal ones.
Since bamboo chopsticks are prone to mold during humid seasons, be sure to wash them after use and let them dry completely before storing them.
-Plastic
Plastic chopsticks come in a wide variety of colors and designs. Designs featuring printed characters or mascots attached to the tips are perfect for children.
Also, during family camping trips or group outings, you can assign different colors to each person, preventing confusion over which pair belongs to whom. Their relatively affordable price is another appealing feature.
Tip #3: Check the Length
The length of the chopsticks is important for enjoying your meal smoothly.
It’s best to choose chopsticks of the length you normally use, but as a general guideline, the recommended lengths are 23 cm for men, 19 cm for women, and 18 cm for children.
Also, for serving or portioning food, cooking chopsticks should be at least 20 cm long.
If you usually use longer chopsticks, keep in mind that metal ones tend to be heavier.
With metal chopsticks, the longer they are, the heavier they become, so be careful.
Tip 4: Look for products with features or designs to prevent loss
It’s common to lose chopsticks at home after washing, drying, and storing them following a meal at a campsite. Many people have likely found themselves searching everywhere, exclaiming, “I can’t find one of my chopsticks!”
To prevent loss, as mentioned earlier, choose a type that can be split in half after use and stored in the handle—this prevents the pieces from getting separated.
Additionally, chopsticks that fit into a dedicated storage case are less likely to get lost and are easier to carry.
Pay attention to the shape of the chopsticks as well. Round chopsticks tend to roll off the table. Those with “edges”—such as square, pentagonal, or hexagonal shapes—are less likely to roll and are harder to lose.
Tip 5: Sets that include cutlery are convenient
Instead of just chopsticks, there are sets that include other cutlery items like spoons, forks, and knives.
With sets, they often come with a storage case or pouch, so you can keep everything together and carry them easily.
Since the materials and designs are consistent, they look great when arranged on the table and make for great photos. It’s also easier to carry than bringing each item separately.
Don’t panic if you forget your chopsticks! You can use twigs as a substitute
You might realize, “I forgot my chopsticks!” while cooking or setting the table at a campsite. In that case, there’s no need to rush to a convenience store to buy disposable chopsticks.
Since you’re out in the great outdoors, why not try using a “small twig” as a substitute for chopsticks?
First, look for small twigs that are as straight as possible.
Be careful, as some trees can cause skin irritation when touched (mainly three types: Japanese wax tree, mountain wax tree, and Japanese sumac).
Cut the twig to the recommended length: 23 cm for men, 19 cm for women, and 18 cm for children.
Wear work gloves or other gloves, and use an outdoor knife to gradually whittle the tip to a fine point. Be careful not to sharpen the tip too much, as this can be dangerous.
TOKYO CRAFTS Chopsticks & Cutlery Series
"TOKYO CRAFTS" is a Japanese camping gear brand renowned for its stylish designs, high functionality, and unique creativity.
Let’s take a look at the brand’s popular camping chopsticks.
Shokki Series Chopsticks Silver/Black
The "Shokki Series Chopsticks" are aluminum alloy chopsticks that can be shortened in the middle—they’re "folding" chopsticks.
The slender tips make it easy to pick up food, and the handles feature a delicate knurled finish for a comfortable grip. Another key feature is the octagonal shape of part of the handle, which prevents the chopsticks from rolling away on slopes.
Their stylish design is another appealing feature. The chopsticks are designed to stack together, making them hard to lose and eliminating the need for a case. They are available in two colors: silver and cool black.
Shokuki Series Cutlery Set Silver/Black
This three-piece set includes a stainless steel spoon, fork, and knife—perfect for meals while camping.
It is highly durable and rust-resistant, making it ideal for outdoor use.
The handles feature a knurled finish, making them easy to grip, slip-resistant, and comfortable to use.
Available in two colors—silver and cool black—each comes with a rugged case that resembles washed leather.
Mini Tongs Silver/Black
Mini tongs are indispensable when handling foods that are difficult to pick up with chopsticks.
When dining, it’s common to serve curry garnishes, chopped green onions, minced garlic or ginger, and pickles in small bowls for everyone to share.
However, if you’re hesitant to dip chopsticks—which have been in your mouth—directly into the dish, these mini tongs make it easy and hygienic to pick up garnishes and other items.
Made of stainless steel, they are lightweight and durable. Available in three colors—silver, sleek black, and gold—we recommend pairing them with a Sierra Cup in the same color.
They’ll add a stylish touch to your table setting.
