[The Importance of Fire Pits] A Summary of How to Choose, Care for, and Recommended Products
Fire pits are an essential item for campfires
"Campfires" are one of the unique joys of camping.
Listening to the crackling sound of firewood in the great outdoors while gazing at the burning flames opens up your heart and puts you in a relaxed, laid-back mood.
When gathered around a campfire with family and friends, you can talk about things you wouldn’t normally discuss,
and when you’re alone on a solo camping trip, gazing at the fire, you might even feel your stress melt away.
The appeal of a campfire lies not only in relaxation and warmth, but also in the variety of ways you can enjoy it, such as boiling water or cooking.
A fire pit is essential for fully enjoying a campfire, but a “fire pit liner” to place underneath it is also a must-have item.
These days, bringing a fire pit mat has become standard etiquette for campers.
A fire pit liner isn’t just any old sheet. It serves an important purpose and offers several benefits.
Protecting the grass and ground at campsites
Recently, more and more campgrounds have banned open fires. This is because open fires can damage the grass and ground, and because an increasing number of campers fail to clean up after themselves, leading to soil degradation.
As a result, while using a "fire pit" has become the norm for campfires, fireproof tarps also play a crucial role.
The primary role of a fire pit liner is to protect the campground’s ground from sparks flying up from the fire pit and splinters of wood that scatter.
Additionally, during dry seasons, flying embers can land on dry branches or grass, posing a fire hazard, so using a fire mat also helps prevent fires.
Depending on where you build your fire, there may be tree roots running beneath the ground. Laying down a fire mat reduces heat transfer to the ground, preventing damage to the tree roots.
Speedy cleanup after the fire
With a fire blanket, cleanup after the fire is a breeze. Once the fire is out, simply make sure the firewood and charcoal are completely extinguished, then sweep the remaining ashes onto the blanket and dispose of them all at once—it’s that easy.
Plus, even if a large amount of ash spills around the fire pit, you can simply carry the sheet to the ash disposal area and shake it out—no need to spend time picking up fine ash.
Tips for Choosing a Fire Pit Mat
Campfire mats are sold by various outdoor gear manufacturers. While there are many types available, be sure to check the following points before purchasing to avoid thinking, “I made a mistake!” after buying one.
Tip 1: Check the Size First
First, check the size of the fire pit liner. While the size of the fire pit you use varies from person to person, the best choice is a size that’s about two sizes larger than your fire pit—one that offers plenty of room.
If you have a few fire mats in mind and are having trouble deciding, go with the “larger product.” Since sparks tend to fly farther than you might expect, a larger size offers greater peace of mind.
Tip 2: There Are Three Main Types of Materials
There are three main types of materials used for fire mats. Each has different characteristics, so choose the one that best suits your needs.
-Glass Fiber
Glass fiber comes in two forms: glass wool (short fibers) and glass fiber (long fibers); the type used for fire mats is glass fiber.
As a non-flammable material, it offers excellent heat resistance and is relatively affordable. However, because it’s made of fine glass fibers, it develops a prickly texture over repeated use. Since the fibers can prick your fingers, gloves are essential when handling it.
Another drawback is that it lacks flexibility, making it difficult to fold compactly.
Silicone-coated products reduce the prickly sensation and improve water repellency, preventing water from soaking in and making it easy to wipe off dirt.
-Silica Fiber
Silica fiber is made by processing inorganic, highly heat-resistant glass fibers. It does not burn in air and has a continuous operating temperature of 1,000 degrees Celsius, making it a highly heat-resistant sheet. Its advantage is that it can withstand prolonged heat exposure better than glass fiber sheets.
However, like glass fiber, they can feel slightly scratchy, and their durability is somewhat inferior.
If this is a concern, please choose a product with a silicone coating. However, there aren’t many options available.
-Fire-resistant fibers
Fire-resistant fiber is made by firing special acrylic fibers at high temperatures. Its main advantage is its pleasant texture. Since it doesn’t feel prickly to the touch, the risk of injuring your fingers is reduced, making it safe to use. Because it is a soft material, it can also be folded compactly.
However, its heat resistance is slightly lower than that of other materials, so placing burning charcoal or firewood on it may cause it to catch fire. Please handle with care.
Tip 3: Check the Continuous Use Temperature and Instantaneous Fire Resistance Temperature
"Continuous use temperature" refers to the temperature that indicates whether the fire sheet can withstand prolonged use.
If the continuous use temperature is low, you may find the ground scorched after putting the sheet away following prolonged use. Since campfire temperatures range from 700 to 800 degrees, we recommend products rated for 800 degrees or higher.
"Instantaneous temperature resistance" indicates the temperature the sheet can withstand for a brief moment. Most products have a resistance of 1,000–1,500 degrees.
Tip 4: Handy to Have! Sheets with Peg Holes
It’s convenient if the fire sheet has grommets at the four corners where you can drive in pegs to secure it.
When the wind is strong, the sheet can flap up during the fire and hit the fire pit, causing it to tip over.
It’s also common for the sheet to get caught on your legs, a table, or a chair and shift out of place.
Securing the four corners with stakes can help prevent such issues. Furthermore, models that come with a storage bag are easier to store and carry.
How to Care for Your Fire Pit Sheet
Over time, fire pits get dirty from charcoal, ash, mud, grease splatters from cooking, and spilled seasonings.
If the product has a water-resistant coating, you can remove dirt by wiping it down with a damp cloth or washing it with water.
If wiping with water doesn’t remove the dirt, use a damp towel with a neutral detergent to clean the surface, then wipe it down with water to finish.
After cleaning, spread it out to dry before storing it in its storage bag.
TOKYO CRAFTS Campfire Mat
"TOKYO CRAFTS" develops original camping gear that not only offers ease of use but also prioritizes functional beauty and high-quality design, ensuring high customer satisfaction.
Here, we introduce a recommended fire pit mat from this brand.
Campfire Mat
While most fire blankets are typically square or rectangular, TOKYO CRAFTS’ fire blanket features an “octagonal design” created by cutting the corners of an 80×80 cm square.
Each corner is equipped with a carrying strap, giving it a distinctive shape.
By gathering the straps, you can place firewood on top and carry it like a duffel bag—a convenient feature. You can also lightly pull the straps to drive in pegs and secure the fire pit mat in place.
The material is a double-layered, flame-resistant black fiberglass (heat-resistant up to 600°C), and since both sides are coated with silicone, the prickly sensation is reduced, so you don’t need to wear gloves.
It comes with a dedicated storage case, making it convenient to carry and store.
Recommended Fire Pit Accessories
"TOKYO CRAFTS" also offers a range of convenient campfire accessories.
Maculite Series
Macraite
The Makulite is a stainless steel fire pit designed exclusively by "TOKYO CRAFTS."
It is lightweight (794g) and compact enough to carry in a backpack, yet its design allows you to burn even large pieces of firewood, enabling you to enjoy a dynamic campfire experience.
Assembly is simple in just three steps. By placing the grate on the cooking surface or on the side panels of the main unit, you can adjust the distance from the firebed, allowing you to control the heat level depending on what you’re cooking.
Macro Light 2
The "MacroLight 2" is an upgraded version of the fire pit, developed based on feedback from users of the original MacroLight.
While there are no major visual differences, the grill plate has been improved to be removable, and the height of the grate—which previously had two levels—can now be adjusted to three levels.
Macrolite Titanium
The Macrolite series also includes the "Macrolite Titanium," which weighs just 545g yet offers high strength and corrosion resistance. Another appealing feature is that when heat is applied to the titanium, it undergoes a color change known as "titanium blue."
Meba BBQ Grill
The "Meba BBQ Grill" is a BBQ grill designed to be mounted on the Cord Unit (a set consisting of foldable legs and a tabletop that can be used as a mini-table or stacked and connected to form a shelf).
To use it, simply open the legs of the Cord Unit and place it on the stand! The tabletop where you place your food opens like a folding door, allowing you to add charcoal from the center or adjust the heat while grilling—a major advantage.
The duct panel on the lower side can be slid open and closed, allowing you to regulate the airflow into the grill. Remove the plate, and it doubles as a fire pit.
Magna Blaster
The "Magna Blaster" is a bellows essential for any bonfire. Its design is inspired by traditional bellows.
The thick body allows for a large volume of airflow, and since it splits into three sections, it’s easy to clean and maintain a hygienic appearance.
Heat Reflector
The "Heat Reflector" is an item that protects the flames from the wind when placed next to the fire.
It not only maintains a steady flame but also provides excellent heating by reflecting radiant heat (heat transmitted via infrared rays and other heat waves) using a metal plate.
Its simple yet distinctive design, featuring black canvas and metal, is sure to stand out at any campsite.
