What are Sierra Cups used for? Here’s how to choose one and our top recommendations

Though small, the "Sierra Cup" is an essential item for camping. It’s a small metal cup with a handle that comes in handy for both day trips and overnight camping.
The term "Sierra Cup" originally referred to the official cup created by the Sierra Club, a nature conservation organization headquartered in the United States.
However, because they are so convenient, their popularity has spread among mountaineers, outdoor enthusiasts, and campers, and now various outdoor gear manufacturers produce them.
While the basic concept of a “metal cup with a handle” remains the same, the shape, size, design, features, and materials vary by manufacturer.
To choose the perfect Sierra Cup for you, first consider how you plan to use it.
Uses for a Sierra Cup

A Sierra Cup is not just a cup. It can serve as a drinking vessel, a serving dish for food, or a cooking utensil—it has a wide range of uses.
Use #1: As a Cooker (Portable Mini Pot)
Since sherpa cups are made of metal, one of their key features is that they can be placed directly over a flame and used as a small cooking pot.
- Boiling Water
- Cooking soup, miso soup, or instant ramen
- Cooking rice
- Stewing, steaming, and grilling
With a little creativity, you can enjoy a wide variety of dishes.
Once your meal is ready, you can use it as a serving dish, making it perfect for solo camping trips where you want to keep your gear to a minimum. Another great feature is that when paired with a folding low table, you can easily create a compact cooking and dining area.
Use #2: As a measuring cup
Some Sierra Cups come with measurement markings on the inside. This makes them convenient to use as a measuring cup when preparing outdoor meals that require precise measurements.
It’s an essential item when cooking rice or making desserts and bread where precise measurements are crucial.
Use #3: As Tableware
A Shera Cup can also be used as tableware on its own. It’s not just for cold drinks—it’s perfect for hot beverages like coffee and tea, too! You can use it as a substitute for a glass when mixing whiskey or shochu, or when drinking wine or beer.
It’s a true all-rounder—perfect as a bowl for soups or miso soup, a rice bowl, or a serving plate for sharing food.
Tips for Choosing a Sierra Cup

Since Sierra Cups are sold by various manufacturers, it can be confusing to know what criteria to use when you’re ready to buy one.
So, here are some tips for choosing a Sherpa cup.
Tip 1: Choose the Capacity Based on Your Intended Use
Shera cups come in various sizes, and the optimal capacity varies depending on the intended use.
Here are some general guidelines:
100–200 ml
Since these are too small to serve as serving dishes, they’re best suited for holding dry snacks like nuts or chocolate, or for drinking whiskey or espresso. They also work well as small plates for dip sauces or soy sauce.
200–400 ml
Generally, around 300 ml is the standard size. It’s perfect for drinking tea or coffee, or for making instant soup or miso soup. It’s also convenient as a cup for water, juice, and other beverages.
400–600 ml size
Not only can it be used as a cup, but it’s also convenient for heating instant ramen, retort-packed curry, or stews. It’s a size suitable for making small stews as well.
Furthermore, since the amount of hot water needed for cup noodles ranges from the standard 300 ml to the large 400 ml size, a Sierra Cup of around 400 ml is likely the best fit.
600–1,000 ml size
This size is best suited for cooking stews and other dishes rather than just as a cup or serving bowl. It’s ideal for cooking about 1 to 1.5 cups of rice.
If you want to cook instant noodles straight from the bag without breaking them up, a cup with a capacity of 900ml or more will make the process smoother.
Tip #2: Choose from a variety of materials! Pick what’s easiest to use
Shera cups come in a variety of materials. Each has different characteristics, so choose the right one based on your needs.
-Stainless Steel

Characterized by extremely high durability and light weight. They’re easy to clean and maintain, and their relatively reasonable price makes them ideal for first-time buyers. While heat conductivity is somewhat low, they can still be used for cooking.
-Titanium

Like stainless steel, it is highly durable and even lighter. It’s ideal for family camping trips when you want to bring multiple Sierra Cups, or for backpacking trips when you want to keep your pack as light as possible.
However, since thermal conductivity is low, you’ll need to be creative when cooking—for example, ensuring the flame always hits the bottom of the cup.
-Copper
Copper Sierra Cups excel at heat conduction, so when placed over a flame, heat is transferred instantly, allowing you to boil water or cook food quickly.
Another appealing feature is how their color changes over time. (With proper care, you can also keep them shiny.)
-Brass

Brass is, above all, excellent at conducting heat, making it ideal for cooking. It is also highly durable and lightweight.
While it’s great for cooking, be careful not to burn yourself, as the handle gets hot when pouring hot liquids.
-Resin
Resin items cannot be placed directly over a heat source. However, they come in a wide variety of colors, allowing you to add a splash of color to your dining table.
They are recommended for serving cold salads, fruits, and desserts, or for serving colorful drinks like fruit punch.
Tip 3: Pay Attention to the Shape of the Handle
Sierra cups come in a variety of handle shapes.
-Straight Type
The type with a straight handle is designed so that your fingers stay away from the heat source while cooking, making it less likely to get hot. There are also types where the handle folds down toward the bottom of the cup.
- Curved Type
This is the classic style, where the tip of the handle curves into a "U" shape for a comfortable grip. You can also hang it on a table or a shelf at a campsite.
Since cups of the same size and shape stack easily, they are well-suited for family camping trips and other group outings.
-Folding Type
This type features a handle that folds along the side of the cup. The handle doesn’t get in the way, making packing a breeze. It’s perfect for solo camping when you want to keep your gear compact.
Tip 4: A cup with measurement markings is convenient for cooking rice and preparing meals
If you want to cook rice or prepare dishes that require precise measurements, a Shera cup with measurement markings is very convenient. It’s an essential item, especially when making desserts or bread, where failure is likely if measurements aren’t accurate.
TOKYO CRAFTS Sierra Cups
"TOKYO CRAFTS" is a Japanese brand that develops highly satisfying, original-design camping gear that combines practicality with functional beauty.
The brand manufactures its Sierra Cups—an essential camping item—in Tsubame-Sanjo (Niigata Prefecture), a town renowned for its metalworking traditions. They are available in various materials and sizes.
Titanium Sierra Cup

The "Titanium Sierra Cup" is made entirely of titanium. It’s incredibly durable and lightweight, making it perfect for those looking to keep their gear light!
The tip of the handle features a gentle, curved design for a comfortable grip.
Additionally, the interior features graduations in 50ml increments from 50ml to 250ml, as well as 90ml increments—handy for measuring 0.5 to 1 cup of rice—making it convenient for cooking rice and preparing meals.
Available in two sizes—shallow and deep—this cup pairs perfectly with the titanium Sierra Cup Plate (sold separately). Not only can the plate serve as a saucer for the cup, but it also doubles as a convenient lid for cooking rice or steaming food.
Stainless Steel Sierra Cup

The "Stainless Steel Sierra Cup" is durable and easy to use. It’s also more affordable than the titanium version! It’s perfect for family camping trips when you want to get a set for everyone.
Made from SUS304 (18-8 stainless steel)—a type of stainless steel known for its rust resistance and hygiene—it features a 0.5mm-thick body and a sturdy 3mm-thick handle wire.
The surface features a hairline finish that hides fingerprints and scratches, giving it a premium look.
Like the titanium version, it features measurement markings, so you can make full use of it as a cooking utensil, serving dish, or drinking cup. A matching Sierra Plate (sold separately) made from the same material is also available.
Black Shera Cup

The "Black Shera Cup" shares the same design, construction, and measurement markings as the titanium and stainless steel versions, but its rugged black finish gives it a unique character.
Although made of stainless steel, it undergoes a black oxidation process—a technique considered particularly difficult to achieve. Of course, no paints or dyes are used, making it safe even for children to use.
The black oxidation process not only darkens the surface but also enhances corrosion and weather resistance. Depending on how it’s used and maintained, it can last a very long time—another major benefit.
Brass Sierra Cup

While most Sierra Cups are made of stainless steel or titanium, TOKYOCRAFTS also produces brass Sierra Cups.
One of the charms of brass is that, over time and with use, it transforms from a lustrous gold to a deeper, more subdued hue!
To allow you to fully enjoy this aging process, we’ve applied a clear plating finish that slows down the rate of change. You’ll be able to appreciate how it develops a more refined, mature patina the more you use it.
Like our other Sierra Cups, this one features the same design, construction, and measurement markings, and is compatible with our separately sold plates.
The Sierra Cup is a camping essential! Find the one that suits you and enrich your camping experience
The appeal of the Shera Cup is that it can be used not only as a cup or bowl but also as a small cooking utensil! You don’t have to go out of your way to bring pots or pans—you can whip up simple meals right there, so you can reduce the number of items you need to pack for your camping trip.
Whether it’s a cold drink with ice or hot coffee and alcohol, everything tastes better when enjoyed from a Sherpa cup than from a glass while surrounded by nature.
Since the feel and usability vary depending on the material and size, many people end up collecting one or two. Be sure to find the perfect Sherpa cup for you.
