Reason 1: Reduces the impact of the ground

Outdoor tents are designed with portability in mind, so the fabric is thin. If you lay your sleeping bag directly on the ground, the hardness and unevenness of the ground are transmitted directly to your body.

If you’re used to sleeping on a soft mattress at home, the hardness and unevenness of the ground will be felt in your back and lower back, making it difficult to fall asleep.

Also, check to see if your sleeping bag will fit properly when laid on top of the tent mat.

Point 2: Products that pack down compactly are ideal

Keep in mind that when you’re not using the tent mat (inner mat), you’ll need to store it in your home or car.

If the mat doesn’t fold down compactly, you’ll need to secure a larger storage space. While this might be manageable for a single person, you’ll need significant space if you have to store multiple tent mats for a family camping trip.

Inflatable mats remain large even when folded, and foam mats, while they can be rolled up, end up as long, bulky cylinders, so you’ll need to get creative with storage.
